Why organic cotton? Your skin will notice and appreciate the difference. Organic cotton is healthier for you and the earth. Organic cotton is sustainably farmed and requires 1/2 the water of conventionally grown cotton. Conventionally grown cotton is the second most pesticide-laden crop in the world, utilizing 25% of the annual pesticide production. During the conversion of conventional cotton into clothing numerous toxic chemicals are added at each stage - silicone waxes, harsh petroleum scours, heavy metals, solvents, flame and soil retardants, ammonium compounds, and formaldehyde. It is estimated that it takes approximately 1/3rd pound of chemicals to grow enough cotton to make one t-shirt. Maggies Clothing is "fair traded": the growers, sewers, dyers, knitters, and spinners receive a "living wage", work in safe, healthy environment, and employ environmentally sustainable practices. Organic cotton is good for you, for your family, for the Earth.
We list, on each sock label, the exact fiber content percentages, by weight, down to the 1/100th of 1% on each label. Many other companies do not list total content...in fact the last time we checked hosiery trade associations actually suggested NOT listing a fiber if it represents less than 5% of the total weight of a sock... don't be fooled by socks that claim to be "one hundred percent cotton".
Our socks are made from several counts of certified Peruvian long staple yarns. They also contain a bit of specially made cotton covered lycra, rubber and nylon:
**lycra and rubber - both are used to aid stretch and durability, and to fit a wide variety of feet. Our lycra is entirely wrapped in cotton.
**nylon - we switched to nylon thread in the toe closures of our socks to minimize bulk.
- One pair each navy, natural and black organic cotton crew socks, mid calf comfort, great cross-stretch, and long-lasting.
